Junquillal, Guanacaste

A quiet stretch of Guanacaste's Gold Coast, where four kilometers of beach face west into the Pacific and turtles still nest in the sand.

Guanacaste

The Coast Before the Crowds

Junquillal sits on the Pacific coast of Guanacaste, Costa Rica's driest and sunniest province, about ninety minutes from the international airport at Liberia. It is a fishing village at heart, with howler monkeys in the trees, tide pools at the south end of the beach and a mangrove estuary just beyond town where kayaks share the water with crocodiles and shorebirds. Unlike Tamarindo up the coast, it never built the strip. There are no resorts and no crowds, and the last stretch of road in is still unpaved, which is most of the reason it stays this quiet.

Why Junquillal

Why Junquillal

The beach is the center of it, and everything else sits a short drive up or down the coast road.

The Season

When to Come to Junquillal

The dry season runs December through April, with cloudless skies, hot afternoons and the coast road at its best. That is the busy stretch, as busy as Junquillal gets. May through November is the green season, when the hills turn lush, mornings stay sunny and the rain arrives in short afternoon bursts, with September and October the greenest and quietest of all. Turtles nest from roughly July into February. The surf works year round.
